After that, you will be able to pick the version of backtrack that you want. I am going to recommend Backtrack 5 R3 since it is the most up-to-date. The window manager is up to you, but I am going to use gnome. Since I will be using backtrack in a virtual machine, the 32 bit version will be fine. We want the ISO because we can use it on a DVD, a USB flash drive, and install on a virtual machine. Direct download or torrent download is up to you. The file is little over 3 GBs, so it may take some time depending on your internet speeds.</div>

A virtual machine (VM) is the software implementation of a physical computer. In other words, it’s having another computer on your current computer. If you have never used a virtual machine it is a good time to start. VMs are excellent when it comes to practice labs which we will get to in another section.</div>

To start, you’re going to need to get VM software. There are many out there, but I will list a few popular ones.</div>

Whichever VM software you go with, make sure it has a way to network with other VMs. If you don’t want to spend the money, go with VirtualBox. If you plan to get serious with penetration testing, you might want to consider getting a VMware Workstation license. It is full of useful tools and goodies such as sharing VMs and remote access and easy to work with.</div>

I will be use VMware Workstation, but these programs are very similar in function. You shouldn’t have trouble following along if you are using something else.</div>

After everything is installed and running, click “Create new virtual machine”.</div>

Give the virtual machine a name such as “Backtrack 5 R3” and select a location for where you want to save the virtual machine files.</div>

When asked how much you want the virtual disk drive to be, you want at least 25 GB. This will be the most demanding requirement of Backtrack 5. I went and used 40 GB for my virtual machine. Although the backtrack-linux wiki says you need at least 20 GB, I found you will run out of space by the time you install updates or any other software. Then, you will have the option of storing the virtual disk as a single file, or split into multiple files. Creating a virtual disk as a single file will allocate all of the space right away. Splitting into multiple files means the drive files will grow as you need them. So if your hard drive space is limited on your host system, go with multiple files. If you have a massive drive, and not worried about space, go with a single file.</div>

And that’s it! The virtual machine is ready to go. I left mine at 1 GB of ram, if you are limited of memory, you can change this in the virtual machine settings. The recommended minimum memory is 512 MB, however you can try lower if you need to.</div>

First turn on your machine, then insert your DVD or USB Drive. Then press the key that allows you to select your boot drive. You may have to go into the bios to enable this. After you select your time zone, and language, you then have to partition your drive. If you are using a virtual machine, go ahead and use the whole drive. If you are dual booting, you will have to specify your partition for your two operating systems.</div>

Note this tutorial is collection of tips I gathered from searching the internet and some credit is due to the original authors. None of which I know.<br />
<br />
A lot of people I know love using the Windows Remote Desktop feature at work, however are prevented from connecting to their home computer because of the company firewall. This is because most corporate firewalls block port 3389 which Remote Desktop uses. Most just switch to VNC, however most find it slower than Remote Desktop.<br />
<br />
This quick tutorial shows how (from a fire walled network that blocks port 3389) you can access your home computer using MS Remote Desktop.<br />
<br />
*This tutorial assumes you have or know how to setup and dynamic DNS client if you need one<br />
<br />
*Assumes you know how to setup port forwarding if you need to.<br />
<br />
Because Remote Desktop is using port 3389 by default, it is not possible to go through a firewall. So you can use port 443. Because this port is always open on your companies firewall to allow https. (One would assume )<br />

At your home PC:<br />

1) Configure Your pc to allow Remote Connections in your System Properties (windows - Break) tab Remote. Check 'Allow users to connect remote to this computer.<br />

Windows XP Professional supports two types of disk storage: basic and dynamic. Basic disk storage uses partition-oriented disks. A basic disk contains basic volumes (primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives).<br />
<br />
Dynamic disk storage uses volume-oriented disks, and includes features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes).<br />
<br />
General Notes<br />
Before you change a basic disk to a dynamic disk, note these items:<br />
<br />
<br />
You must have at least 1 megabyte (MB) of free space on any master boot record (MBR) disk that you want to convert. This space is automatically reserved when the partition or volume is created in Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional. However, it may not be available on partitions or volumes that are created in other operating systems.<br />
<br />
When you convert to a dynamic disk, the existing partitions or logical drives on the basic disk are converted to simple volumes on the dynamic disk.<br />
<br />
After you convert to a dynamic disk, the dynamic volumes cannot be changed back to partitions. You must first delete all dynamic volumes on the disk, and then convert the dynamic disk back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, you must first back up or move the data to another volume.<br />
<br />
After you convert to a dynamic disk, local access to the dynamic disk is limited to Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000.<br />
<br />
If your disk contains multiple installations of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000, do not convert to a dynamic disk. The conversion operation removes partition entries for all partitions on the disk with the exception of the system and boot volumes for the current operating system.<br />
<br />
Dynamic disks are not supported on portable computers or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.<br />
<br />
Before you change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk, note that all existing volumes must be deleted from the disk before you can convert it back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, back up the data, or move your data to another volume.<br />

To convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk:<br />

1) Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.<br />

3) Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.<br />
<br />
4) In the left pane, click Disk Management.<br />
<br />
5) In the lower-right pane, right-click the basic disk that you want to convert, and then click Convert to Dynamic Disk.<br />
<br />
NOTE:You must right-click the gray area that contains the disk title on the left side of the Details pane. For example, right-click Disk 0.<br />
<br />
6) Select the check box that is next to the disk that you want to convert (if it is not already selected), and then clickOK.<br />
<br />
7) Click Details if you want to view the list of volumes in the disk.<br />
<br />
8) Click Convert.<br />

9) Click Yes when you are prompted to convert, and then click OK.<br />
