McAfee vows to make Internet 'impossible to hack'

Anti-virus software pioneer John McAfee, who buried himself in the sand to hide from police in Belize, faked a heart attack in a Guatemalan detention center and admits playing the "crazy card," says he's now ready for his next adventure: a return to Silicon Valley.

At the age of 67, McAfee is promising to launch a new cyber security company that will make the Internet safer for everyone.

"My new technology is going to provide a new type of Internet, a decentralized, floating and moving Internet that is impossible to hack, impossible to penetrate and vastly superior in terms of its facility and neutrality. It solves all of our security concerns," McAfee said in an interview with The San Jose Mercury News.

Despite his colorful lifestyle and his even more colorful recent history, McAfee remains one of the most prominent entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley history. In 1989 he founded the antivirus software company in Santa Clara that still bears his name and once was worth an estimated $100 million. In 1994 McAfee ended his relationship with the company and moved to Colorado.

In a nearly one-hour interview, McAfee was typically tantalizing and elusive, declining to answer other questions about his proposed company, saying more details will come Saturday when he speaks at the inaugural C2SV music festival and tech conference at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.

But he did mention the two competing movies about his life that are due out within the next two years, along with a biographical book, a 90-minute TV documentary and a series of graphic comic books about his five years in Belize.

Police in Belize still want to talk to McAfee, who remains wanted as a "person of interest" in the shooting death of his neighbor, police spokesman Rafael Martinez told this newspaper Tuesday.

COBIT 5 for risk provides guidelines to manage increased IT risk

ROLLING MEADOWS, USA: From cyberattacks and malicious employee actions to hacks into corporate social media accounts, 2013 is turning out to be a watershed year for technology-related enterprise threats. 
Organizations must integrate technology risk much more aggressively into enterprise risk management (ERM) if they want to reduce future loss and improve business performance, says a new guide from global IT association ISACA. 
 
Mismanaging IT risk can reduce business value, create financial loss, damage corporate reputation and overlook promising new opportunities. 
According to a study by the Project Management Institute, every billion dollars that an enterprise spends represents $135 million in risk. ISACA's COBIT 5 for Risk, developed by a global committee of risk professionals, provides a detailed guide to governing and managing IT risk in the face of today's unpredictable threats. 
 
"The 2013 risk landscape is unprecedented, marked by deliberate employee actions like the Snowden leaks, denial-of-service attacks against major banks, hacks into prominent Twitter and Facebook accounts, and cyberattacks against both businesses and government," said Steven Babb, chair of the COBIT 5 for Risk Task Force. "It's no longer enough to identify a risk and add it to a risk register. COBIT 5 for Risk provides key guidance on tying IT risk directly to strategic business outcomes." 
 
COBIT 5 for Risk, available at www.isaca.org/cobit5forrisk, is based on the globally recognized COBIT 5 framework for the governance and management of enterprise IT. The guide provides 20 risk scenario categories with potential responses. These scenarios include employee sabotage and theft, data breaches, disclosure of sensitive information through social media, industrial espionage, and support for innovation.</div>

Pirate Bay Founder Hacking Sentence Slashed in Half on Appeal

After being arrested at his home in Cambodia in 2012, earlier this year Gottfrid Svartholm was found guilty of hacking a Swedish IT company and a local bank. His appeal was heard earlier this month and today the Court of Appeal handed down its decision. The popular Swede, one of the founders of The Pirate Bay, had mixed fortunes. He was found guilty of hacking Logica but cleared of hacking the bank. His sentence was reduced from two years to just one.

In May 2013, Pirate Bay founder Gottfrid Svartholm went on trial following allegations that the hacked into Logica, a Swedish IT company working with local tax authorities, and local bank Nordea. 
 
Following a two-week trial during which the Swede protested his innocence, the Nacka District Court handed down its verdict. Gottfrid was found guilty of hacking, aggravated fraud and attempted aggravated fraud, and was handed a two-year jail sentence. 
 
The decision was unpopular with both the defense and prosecution. The latter felt that the sentence was not harsh enough and the former objected on the basis that the District Court didn’t examine the available evidence in enough detail. 
 
“The important thing is to get the higher court to try the evidence in-depth, something that the lower court definitively didn’t do,” Kristina Svartholm, Gottfrid’s mother, previously told TorrentFreak. 
 
In July it was announced that the case would go to appeal and earlier this month the process took place. The Court of Appeal heard testimony from Tor developer and former Wikileaks spokesman Jacob Appelbaum who argued that Gottfrid’s theory – that his computer had been taken over and abused remotely – was a sound one. 
 
A few moments ago the Court of Appeal handed down its decision and it was mixed fortunes for the 28-year-old. 
 
The Court upheld the guilty verdict in the hacking of IT company Logica, but overturned the guilty verdict handed down in respect of the breach at the Nordea bank. 
 
As a result the two-year jail sentence handed down earlier in 2013 was slashed to just one year.</div>

MIKE Lynch, the entrepreneur who built his Autonomy Group into one of europe's most successful technology companies, has made a $20m (€15m) bet on an anti-hacking firm. 
 
Tipperary-born Lynch, who sold Autonomy Group to HP for $11bn, subsequently set up $1bn investment firm Invoke Capital to buy stakes in cutting-edge technology firms. 
 
The investment in UK cyber security group Darktrace is the fund's first investment. It is targeting spending between $10m and $20m on each of its punts. 
 
Lynch and some of his former executives from Autonomy have put $100m of their own money into the fund. 
 
Darktrace's technology works by luring hackers into certain parts of a company's network where it is able to track them down. It creates so-called honey-pot files to act as bait for hackers before unmasking them. 
 
The spy theme is continued throughout the company, as Jonathan Evans, a former MI5 director-general, is a board member of Darktrace. 
 
The sale of Autonomy in 2010 was the biggest-ever buyout of a European technology firm. However, the deal went sour, with HP accusing Lynch of misrepresenting Autonomy's finances. It wrote down the value of the firm by $8.8bn. 
 
Lynch has denied these claims and said HP mishandled the deal.
